What is monk fruit?

Monk fruit is a small melon also known as luo han guo, found in parts of China and Thailand. It got its name from the monks that first harvested the fruit as early as the 13th century. Traditionally monk fruit was used as a cough remedy to soothe the throat, but today many people are using this exotic fruit as a modern-day sweetener for everything from baking to teas and beverages.

The Chinese government has taken legal action to protect it’s monopoly over the harvesting of monk fruit and has banned the export of the fruit outside of China. Because of this enforcement, all growing and processing of monk fruit must be done within China which has increased the price of the raw dried goods worldwide. 

Monk fruit can be found in a variety of forms such as liquid, powder and granules (just like sugar), however, you should always read the ingredients on all monk fruit products as some of them may have added ingredients such as stabilizers, fillers or sugar alcohols which can increase the caloric intake 

 

Health Benefits of Monk Fruit

While monk fruit is similar to stevia and erythritol in terms of them all having a glycemic index of zero, many more people are choosing monk fruit as their plant-based sweetener of choice  because it offers fewer side effects and more health advantages.

Not only can monk fruit sweeten your food and drinks with zero calories, some research has shown that its mogrosides have antioxidant properties that help to fight free radical damage. These antioxidants also naturally have anti-inflammatory effects which can help to fight infections from bacteria and soothe sore throats.

While there are many additional health benefits of monk fruit as a plant-based natural sweetener, it should still be used in moderation – just like all sweeteners should be – since they have the ability for our body to crave sugary treats and create an unhealthy relationship with food.
